October 2002

Note from Zoe

Fall is my very favorite time of year. The coolness in the air is a relief after the relentless summer heat. October is a wonderful month because the crazy rush of the holidays hasn't yet arrived, the State Fair is going strong, and my girls have a two week fall break from their school. We are excited about our upcoming trip to a Texas dude ranch. Every Texas kid, even a city kid, needs a ranch experience with horseback riding, cowboys and campfire sing-a-longs. After all, my girls are native Texans even though their mom can't claim that status.

Time Matters

Here is a short list of time periods that are relevant to Texas family law cases. In small percentage of cases the time limits may be different.

Time between obtaining marriage license and getting married: 72 hours.

Minimum waiting period for a Texas divorce : 60 days from the filing of the petition.

Waiting period from date of divorce until remarriage: 30 days.

Time it takes for a divorce prove-up in family law court: 5 minutes.

Time the marriage must have lasted in order to potentially qualify for spousal maintenance: 10 years.

Length of time child support must be paid: Until the child's 18th birthday or graduation from high school, whichever is later.

Star Telegram Features Collaborative Law

I had the pleasure recently of being interviewed regarding my interest and participation in the new collaborative family law movement with a Star Telegram reporter. The following is the entire article as it was printed in the newspaper on Sunday, September 22, 2002. By the way, they misspelled my first name. It's not "Zoey." It's "Zoe." Nonetheless, I was glad to see the Star Telegram help spread the word about collaborative law divorces. Collaborative law is definitely a better way to go. After all, do you want a judge to make decisions about your children and your money, or do you want to make those decisions along with your spouse in order to get to a resolution that fits your family?
