Note from Zoe

Business has been brisk, and has left me with little time to write the newsletter. My goal is to publish it once a month, but I have fallen behind. I hope you find this newsletter helpful. Email me at zoemeigs@msn.com with your comments or questions. Have a great Fourth of July and a great summer!

Firm Adds New Legal Assistant

Kathy Williams has joined my paralegal, Kim Cleaver, and I this last week of June. She will be answering the phone, taking care of files and many other tasks. Kathy has experience working as a temp for other law firms. Having her help will allow us to continue to provide top-notch legal services. We are so glad to have her help. Kim has moved into the office next to Zoe, and Kathy will be in the reception area. Kathy is married to Ed, who is also the computer guru for our firm. They have a three-year-old daughter, Brenda and a new baby named Steven.

Closing a Child Support Account

Most Texas orders provide that an obligation to pay child support ends when the only child ort the youngest child turns 18 years of age, unless the child is still enrolled in high school. If the child is still enrolled in high school, the obligation to pay child support continues until the child graduates. The Tarrant County Child Support Office has the following requirements to close a child support account:

  1. There must be no legal action or litigation of any kind currently pending in the case.
  2. The child must be 18 years old.
  3. There must be a current address on file for the obligor. (The one who pays.)
  4. Child support must be current with no arrearage.
  5. Domestic Relations Office fees must be current.
  6. Documentation must be provided. The necessary documents are:

Copy of the last court order
Copy of high school diploma or certified or notarized letter from school, or certified or notarized high school transcript or GED certificate
If the child support has been paid through income withholding, the Child Support Registry will notify the employer to discontinue deductions.

Advanced Family Law Course August 5 -8

I will be attending this course in Dallas. My paralegal and assistant will be taking care of business, and I will be checking in with them for messages. I plan on spending Wednesday of the course at the Collaborative Law training option. I am a member of the fledgling Tarrant County Collaborative Law Group and have been trained in that type of practice, but I want to learn more and get more training. I think collaborative law has a bright future as an alternative to the adversarial, expensive route of doing your divorce through court.
