Minimizing the effects of divorce on children

A family law attorney must face numerous issues that go hand-in-hand with divorce. In most cases, parents in the midst of divorce feel extremely overwhelmed. They may fail to notice important issues such as the effect a divorce may be having on the children. Family law attorneys are skilled at handling the legal aspects of divorce, but they also serve as a source of support to the parents they represent. As such, these attorneys can help their clients sort through many of the issues that may be plaguing the children of divorce.

An attorney's best tool for helping parents face the deeper issues of divorce is education. Education can begin anywhere and at anytime throughout the divorce and this blog is a great place to get started.

In a conflict-ridden divorce, problems the parents must face naturally roll down to the children. Some of the negative by-products divorce can bring to children include:

-- Feeling responsible for the divorce -- Bottling up emotions -- Long and short-term feelings of fear -- Depression, stress and anxiety -- Loss of focus in school -- Use of alcohol or drugs in older children

Of course, parents want to minimize or eliminate these effects, but often they do not know how. Family law attorneys can help these parents improve their focus on the children by facilitating all elements of divorce and handling legal matters as quickly as possible. In some cases, they may also counsel their clients on how to eliminate certain anxiety-causing behaviors such as:

-- Asking children to choose one parent over the other -- Speaking negatively about the other parent -- Fighting or arguing in front of the children -- Avoiding conversations about the divorce

Family law attorneys are not psychologists, but they can use their experience to help Texas families cope with the strain of divorce.
