Myths and truths about divorce

It's normally not in someone's plans to go through a divorce. When someone gets married, he or she believes -- perhaps naively -- that the marriage will last forever. When it does, it can be devastating to everyone involved.

There are some common myths about divorce, though, that can actually make the process more difficult. Consider the following:

-- He or she is my "soulmate." The belief that there is only one person you will love or love you because that is what the universe decides is rather faulty on many levels. Marriage is not about finding our soulmates, but finding someone we want to make our soulmate.

-- A divorce is failure. This is a belief society has embedded within us, but sometimes, just being able to leave your marriage takes more strength and courage than staying. People of all ages and means get married and divorced, though.

-- I don't want to be alone. Society has also told us that being by ourselves is not acceptable. This can often lead people to stay in a marriage that isn't healthy. For some, being single is better than being marriage.

-- The kids are the ones who will suffer. There is truth to this one for most children. However, getting divorced doesn't mean your kids will be neglected. You will have to help them through this difficult time and realize that staying in a bad marriage was not making things easier for them either.

If you are considering divorce, there are many facts you need to know. Discussing your situation with an experienced divorce attorney can help you understand your legal options.
