As you go through divorce, you may spend many days thinking about the well being of your children.
At some point, you need to better understand how child custody will be determined. The more knowledge you have, the greater chance there is of settling on an outcome that you are comfortable with.
Here are some of the many child custody considerations:
— Type of child custody arrangement. You need to understand your options in regards to the many types of custody arrangements. For example, joint legal custody is among the most common.
— The decision maker. While it is possible for the court to make the final decision in regards to child custody, it is important to realize that an out-of-court agreement is more common. This is when both parents work together to settle on an arrangement that works for all parties involved.
— The best interest of the child. When it comes down to it, the court will always side with the child. No matter what, the court will make child custody decisions based on the best interest of the child.
You may not get everything you want out of the divorce process, especially when it comes to matters of child custody, but you need to realize that there are steps you can take to ensure that you are comfortable with the end result.
Understanding the many child custody considerations will help you clear the air. What matters most is that you come to an agreement that works for you, your former spouse, and your children.
