Consider these factors when choosing a legal guardian

Choosing a legal guardian for your child is a big decision. Since there is so much that goes into this, it's essential that you take your time. Furthermore, you don't want to make a decision until you are confident of what you are doing.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a legal guardian, with the following among the most important:

-- A guardian must be of adult age, which is typically 18.

-- Make sure that the person has an interest in raising your child the same way as you would.

-- The legal guardian should be able to keep up with the physical and emotional demands of raising a child.

-- The legal guardian must have enough time in his or her schedule to care for your child.

-- Find a guardian who has the financial means to take on this responsibility.

Along with the above, you should also consider naming a secondary legal guardian. This person will take on the responsibility should something happen to your primary guardian. This is an unlikely situation, but it's something you should do for peace of mind and security.

Choosing a legal guardian is never easy. Not only is this a big decision, but it means you have to come to grips with the fact that you could pass away at some point before your child reaches age 18. When you know how to choose a legal guardian and when you know which factors are most important, you can make a decision that suits you and your child's needs.
