Understand how the child's best interests are determined

One of the primary concerns of a child custody case is determining what is in the child's best interests. This is something that is easy to forget because the parents in these cases often think about how various arrangements are going to impact them instead of thinking about the child.

Several different points are in the picture when you are trying to determine what is in the child's best interests. Some of these points are important in some cases, but not others. It is imperative that you think about your child's unique circumstances when you are trying to make a case for his or her best interests.

If your child is old enough to make his or her wishes known, this can have an impact on child custody decisions. It is important to ensure that what the child is saying he or she wants is actually the case and not just something that is being said out of anger or due to a similar situation.

The abilities of the parents are another factor that comes into the picture here. The financial status of the parents isn't necessarily a factor, but how the parents are able to care for the child due to mental and physical capabilities is what matters.

Children need a stable home to thrive. The ability of each parent to provide this matters in child custody cases. In many cases, both parents can give the child stability. For this reason, many child custody cases include the parents both having equal time with the child.

When you are in the midst of a child custody case, make sure you consider each option that you have so that you can advocate for your child each step of the way.
