Come up with a custody plan with these tips

There has likely never been a time when a divorcing couple has looked at each other and thought that coming up with a custody plan was easy. There are many things to consider, such as their personal responsibilities, their child's engagements, school districts and other factors.

With so much to consider, it's no wonder that so many people get frustrated with trying to come up with a custody plan. Fortunately, there are a few things that can help.

Start with the basics

To start with, you and the other parent should sit down with your work schedules. This is the most basic schedule you'll have to look at. Compare your schedules, and see where they do or do not overlap. On days when you're free and your ex-spouse is not, you may want to take on custody and vice-versa.

Start filling in the blanks

Next, start deciding how you'll take care of child care arrangements on the days when you or your ex-spouse aren't available. Who can watch your children? Is one of you able to change your work schedule to accommodate the need for child care?

Take your dispute to a mediator if necessary

Finally, take your dispute to a mediator if needed. A mediator can talk to you about custody plans that may work in your case as well as plans you may not have thought of in the past.

Your attorney will talk to you more about setting up custody if you have concerns about the arrangements and the factors that are preventing you from coming up with a satisfying schedule.
