Divorcing? Your attorney can help

You and your spouse were always together but over time, you found that neither of you had anything to say to each other. You felt that you'd grown apart, so you brought up the idea of a divorce.

Your spouse did not take kindly to the suggestion and acted as if there was nothing wrong with your relationship. Unfortunately, now that you've brought it up, your spouse has been treating you differently. It's clear that you need to move forward with your suggestion, but what should you do to make the process as painless as possible?

Talk to your attorney

If you still want to try to save your marriage, then you may want to try a temporary separation and counseling. If not, then it's time to talk to your attorney. Your attorney will give you a number of things to consider before you divorce, such as the overall cost of divorcing and the documents that you'll need to get together.

Be clear with your spouse

It's smart to talk to your spouse about the divorce and to try to keep things friendly. You may try to explain yourself and discuss how you'd like to move forward. It may be that your spouse wants to try to work on your marriage. If you're happy to do that, then you should try to work out the kinks in your marriage first. If you or they are uninterested in working on the marriage, then start talking about how you'd like to divide your assets.

Your attorney will give you more guidance on what to do if you feel a divorce is the right choice. Our site has more on divorce and what you should expect moving forward.
