Respect is an essential part of any divorce: Be reasonable

Going through a divorce has its positives and negatives. If you've been in a relationship that you were not happy with for some time, then going through divorce may feel like a relief. If you did not expect a divorce, then it may be frustrating and sad.

No matter how you feel, one thing that you need to remember is that respect goes a long way in divorce. You may hate your spouse or are very angry, but if you can be respectful, you'll be able to resolve the divorce and move forward more quickly.

What can you do if you seek a divorce and your spouse won't be reasonable?

To start with, if your spouse wasn't expecting a divorce, they may be upset and still trying to cope with the idea of separating from you. It's in your best interests to be kind and patient, since they may be dealing with a lot of grief and many strong feelings. Give your estranged spouse time to calm down and do your best to be understanding of their emotions. If they become aggressive, argumentative or harassing, then it's time to have your attorney step in.

What should you do if you are caught off-guard by your spouse seeking divorce?

A divorce should be a last resort. If you and your spouse were seemingly happy but your spouse suddenly asks for a divorce, you may want to suggest marriage counseling or other options. You may be able to find common ground and keep your marriage together. If not, try to gracefully accept their wishes and work with your attorney to seek a fair division of your assets.
