If you have limited parenting time, your actions matter

Having custody of your child as a single parent has its benefits and downsides. On one hand, you're able to make the rules in your house. You are the only person your child answers to while they're with you. You can make plans and carry them out.

On the other hand, you have to stick to a custody schedule and can't always be there for your child. You don't see them as much as you'd like, and it's hard on both of you.

Dealing with limited parenting time can be hard, but there are ways to make the most of it. Some great ideas for what you can do when you spend time with your child include:

  • Talking about school, homework and extracurricular activities
  • Signing up for sports programs that take place on your custody days
  • Going out to do things together, like going golfing or swimming
  • Having a regular schedule, so that you can make special dates together. For example, you could set aside every Friday visitation day as movie night with pizzas and snacks

As a parent who wants to be there every day, it can be hard to be apart. However, it's important to remember that it's the way you spend your time with your child that counts. Taking care of them is essential, and that means making them a priority when they're in your care. When you have custody, you can focus on making great memories and raising a child who understands the difficulties in divorce while still thriving despite it. With the right schedule and planning, you can successfully parent your child, even when you're not seeing them as regularly as you'd like.
