Prenatal paternity test questioned in child custody case

Texans who follow custody battles may be aware of a case where a father, who is an NBA player, is demanding additional testing to confirm a paternity test that had been previously performed. If it is proven he is the biological father, he is asking for sole custody.

The pitfalls of using social media while in a divorce

It may be very tempting for Texas residents in a divorce to take to social media to rant about their ex or their divorce. However, that short rant could prove costly in the long run. It is important to remember that social media is not private, and, even if someone has blocked an ex, there are still ways an ex can see that information and use it in the divorce.

More single dads heading up households

The rise in divorce rates in Texas and elsewhere has resulted in an increase in single parent households. Many of these are run by single moms, but there has been a fairly rapid rise in the number of households led by single dads as well. A recent Pew Research Center study found that in 1960, there were an estimated 300,000 households with minor children headed by single fathers, with the number growing to 2.6 million by 2011.

Cleese paying millions in alimony

Texas audiences who enjoyed John Cleese's "The Alimony Tour" may not be too surprised that the title of the show was based on real circumstances from his life. After he and his psychotherapist wife entered into a divorce settlement, the comedian of the one-man show has had to tour to make enough money to pay his hefty alimony payments.

More states ruling in favor of shared parenting, child custody

If some family law advocates have their way, divorcing parents in Texas and around the country may serve as legally equal partners in the raising of their children. The idea of shared child custody, not just on paper but also in terms of responsibilities and parenting time, seems to be gaining ground. Some feel this is a reflection of the changes in gender roles over the past few decades, creating a situation in which many noncustodial parents chafe at the limited roles allowed them by the courts.

Jon Gosselin wants primary custody of sextuplets

Texas fans of reality TV may remember the show "Jon & Kate Plus 8," in which father Jon Gosselin and mother Kate dealt with not only a set of twins but sextuplets as well. The show has been off the air for years, and even though Jon and Kate divorced long ago, a new child custody wrinkle recently appeared in their story. Jon said during a magazine interview that he was ready to sue Kate for custody of their sextuplets, now nine years of age.

Custody agreements are enforceable internationally

Divorced people in Texas who are involved in child custody disputes with their former spouses may be aware that child custody agreements are enforceable across state lines. They may not be aware that child custody orders are enforceable internationally. A woman discovered this when she took her children from California to Europe. Her children were reunited with their respective fathers after having been separated from them for 18 months.

Battle over custody of Native American child continues

Texas readers may be interested to know that the biological father of Baby X was extradited to South Carolina. Authorities have become convinced that he's disobeying a court order that allows the adoptive parents to visit the four-year-old as she prepares to transition back to their home in this long running child custody dispute.

Actress threatens president, loses child custody

A professional actress in Texas was taken into custody on June 7 and accused of mailing poisoned communication to President Obama, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and to a leader of the mayor's gun-control group. The actress is charged with sending letters laced with ricin, a poison produced from castor beans, to the three politicians. The woman was held in federal custody and scheduled for a competency hearing on Aug. 28.

Wife alleges multimillion-dollar sham by Texas hand surgeon

A well-known Texas hand surgeon was running nine different front companies to collect millions in a complex sham, according to his estranged wife. Child custody and visitation changes were demands made in her fifth amended petition to modify the terms of her divorce from the surgeon. She sought sole custody of the children, with only supervised visitation from their father. She was also suing her husband for fraud, saying that he moved money to hide it during the divorce proceedings.
